A Moratorium on Cod
Artist: Ray Miller, Southeast, Placentia, Newfoundland
A moment frozen in time. The official announcement of "A Moratorium on Cod." A letter is read by a fisherman's son to his father and mother in the family fishing shed. All activity has stopped. The news is devastating. The fisherman's wife reaches for her husband and has laid her hand on his shoulder in support. (good times and in bad) The tangled fishing net on the table is symbolic of the state of the fishery in the province of Newfoundland. The expression on the face of the fisherman is one of disbelief, anguish and torment as he stares into empty space. There is an air of complete silence as the question arises, "This is my life, where do I go from here?"
